Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्)

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्) is a Sanskrit phrase which means “the world is one family”.

The verse is also engraved in the entrance hall of the Parliament of India.

This verse has two different versions, one version is found in Mahopanishad (महोपनिषत्) and second version is found in Panchatantra (पंचतंत्र)

First Version

अयं बन्धुरयं नेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् ।
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥ – Mahopanishad 6.71

  • यह अपना बन्धु है और यह अपना बन्धु नहीं है, इस तरह की गणना छोटे चित्त वाले लोग करते हैं। उदार हृदय वाले लोगों की तो (सम्पूर्ण) धरती ही परिवार है।
  • One is a relative and other is stranger, say the small minded. The entire world is a family, to the generous.

Second Version

अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् ।
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥ – Panchantantra 5.3.37 ( सिंहकारकमूर्खब्राह्मण-कथा, अपरीक्षितकारक)

  • यह मेरा है वह तेरा है यह सब ओछे व्यक्तिकी मनसिकता की उपज है ! उदार चरित्रवालेके लिए पूरा विश्व ही कुटुंब होता है !
  • One is a mine and this is yours, say the small minded. The entire world is a family, to the generous.
