Different names of Sri Krishna

As mentioned in Mahabharata Udyog Parva, chapter 70, when Dhritarashtra ask about the various name of Sri Krishna to Sanjaya. Following are the names explained by Sanjaya to him.

Vasudev (वासुदेव) and Vishnu (विष्णु)

  • Since Krishna is the abode of all species and he resides in all of them, so he is called as Vasu (वसु), and also he is the place of origin for all devatas, so devatas resides in him, so he is called as Dev (देव). therefore he is called as Vasudev (वासुदेव)
  • Since he is extremely vast, so he is called as Vishnu (बृहत्त्वाद् विष्णुरुच्यते)

Madhav (माधव) and Madhuha (मधुहा)

  • He is known by silence, meditation and Yoga, therefore know him as Madhav (माधव)
  • Since Krishna is the origin and residing place of this earth which is referred by Madhu word, and other elements, therefore he is called as Madhuha (मधुहा)

  • कृष् dhatu represent the existence and “ण” word represent bliss or happiness, and Vishnu combing with these two qualities is referred as Krishna (कृष्ण:)

Pundrikaksha (पुण्डरीकाक्ष) and Janardana (जनार्दन)

  • Since Pundrik (पुण्डरीक) is name of the god’s great abode which is ever-present , indestructible and decay-less. Residing there supreme god pervades it therefore he is called as Pundrikaksha (पुण्डरीकाक्ष)
  • One who give pain to class of evil beings, he is called as Janardana (जनार्दन)

Satvata (सत्त्वत), Arshabha (आर्षभ) and Vrishabhekshana (वृषभेक्षणः)

  • He doesn’t part away from truth or renounce it, therefore he is called as Satvata (सत्त्वत). Vedas are called as Arsha (आर्ष), being known from Arsha, therefore god is known as Arshabha (आर्षभ)
  • Vrishabha (वृषभ) also means Vedas, and God is seen through the eyes of Vedas (ईक्षण) , therefore he is called as Vrishabhekshana (वृषभेक्षणः)

Aja (अज) and Damodar (दामोदर)

  • The conqueror of enemy forces, Krishna is not born form any birth giving species, therefore he is called as Aja (अज)
  • Devata are self luminous, and since Sri Krishna has highest luminous among them, so is called as Udar (उदर), and secondly he has quality of senses-control (दम), so he is referred as Dama ( दाम). When we combine these two words, we get his name as Damodar (दामोदर)

Hrishikesha (हृषीकेश) and Mahabahu (महाबाहु)

  • He is filled with joy and Happiness so he is Hrishik (हृषीक) and he also have great grandeur so he is called as Isha (ईश) ,therefore the name of god is Hrishikesha (हृषीकेश)
  • Since god hold this earth and sky with his two arms, so he is called as Mahabahu (महाबाहु)

Adhokshaja (अधोक्षज) and Narayana (नारायण)

  • Sri Krishna never break when he fall down, so he is called as Adhokshaja
  • Since all Jeevatma (नर) takes refuge (अयन) in him , so he is called as Narayana (नारायण)

Purushottam (पुरुषोत्तम) and Sarva (सर्व)

  • He is perfect and best among all other Purusha (पुरुष), so he is called as Purushottam (पुरुषोत्तम)
  • Since he is the origin and resolution of all Sat (Real) and Asat (Unreal), and he always know them so he is called as Sarva (सर्व)

  • Since Sri Krishna resides in truth and truth resides in him, and Bhagawan Govind is greatest truth than the truth himself, so he is called with name as Satya (सत्य)

Vishnu , Jishnu , Ananta and Govind

  • Because he strode in Vamana Avatar, due to that superpower he is called as Vishnu (विष्णु विक्रमणात्)
  • He conquered everyone, so he is called as Jishnu
  • Since he is ever-present , so he is called as Ananta (शाश्वतत्वाद् अनन्त:)
  • Since he is knower and the illuminator of the senses (गाम्) , so he is called as Govinda ( गां विन्दति इति गोविन्द)
