Parashara Gita

Parashara Gita (पराशर गीता) is the collection of the dialogues between the sage Parashara and King Janaka of Mithila. It is mentioned in the Shanti Parva, chapter 290 to chapter 298 of the Mahabharata. It is divided into nine chapters.

In this sage Parashara has highlighted the importance of Dharma, Actions, Moksha and importance of righteous conduct over wealth.

Parashara Gita was disclosed by Bhishma to Yudhishthira. When in Shanti Parva , Yudhishthira asked Bhishma who was lying on the bed of arrow :

युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अतः परं महाबाहो यच्छ्रेयस्तद्वदस्व मे ।
न तृप्याम्यमृतस्येव वचसस्ते पितामह ॥ १ ॥

Yudhishthira said: O one with great arms, O grandfather, please tell me what is beneficial next. Like one is never tired of drinking nectar, similarly I am not satisfied and want to listen more of your advices.

किं कर्म पुरुषः कृत्वा शुभं पुरुषसत्तम ।
श्रेयः परमवाप्नोति प्रेत्य चेह च तद्वद ॥ २ ॥

O best among men, please tell me what auspicious action (karma) a person should perform to attain the supreme good both in this world and in the next.

भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथा पूर्वं महायशाः ।
पराशरं महात्मानं पप्रच्छ जनको नृपः ॥ ३ ॥

Bhishma said: Regarding this matter, I shall narrate to you, how long ago, the renowned King Janaka questioned the great sage Parashara.
