Why Vishnu is called Narayana ?

Meaning of Narayana (नारायण)

Narayana –  One who has water his abode, is called as Narayana (नारा जलं अयनं स्थानं यस्य)

नारायण = नार ( water)  + अयन (abode)

Reference in Manu Smriti:

It is mentioned in  Manu Smriti (मनुस्मृति) 1.10

आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ता आपो वै नरसूनवः ।
ता यदस्यायनं पूर्वं तेन नारायणः स्मृतः । 

Water is also called as Nara (नार) because it came out of नर ( Supreme God ). Since this water (नार ) is the first abode of the Supreme God, so he called as Narayan (नारायण)

Reference in Purana :

आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ता आपो वै नरसूनवः ।
अयनं तस्य ताः पूर्वं तेन नारायणः स्मृतः ॥ – Vishnu Purana  (प्रथम अंश) -Chapter 4 verse 6

आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ता मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः।।
अयनं तस्य ताः पूर्वं तेन नारायणः स्मृतः। –    Brahma Purana  Chapter 180 verse 16
