In Sanskrit Grammar, there are taddhita-pratyaya ( suffix ) which when added to noun, pronoun and adjective creates a new word.

There are many suffix which when added to a name of person, gives a name of offspring (अपत्य) of that person.

तस्यापत्यम्  4.1.92 which means “To indicate the meaning of ‘his/her offspring’, the word in the षष्ठी विभक्ति gets an appropriate प्रत्यय”

These words formed using these suffix, are directly used in scriptures to represent an offspring of a particular person.

for eg. पाण्डव: = पाण्डु + अण् ( Pandava meaning the son of Pandu )
