This story is mentioned in Mahabharata, Shantiparva Chapter 2, when a cow was mistakenly killed by Karna belonging to a Brahmin. Brahmin than gave Karna the curse that wheel of his chariot will be stuck in the earth.

Once upon a time Karna was roaming on sea shore holding his bow and arrow.

A cow belonging to Agnihotri Brahmin came there and Karna unknowingly thinking that it might be dangerous animal, killed the Cow

Karna went up to the Brahmin and told him the whole instance and asked for forgiveness.

Brahmin got angry after hearing the same and with harsh words said – “Sinful, you should also be killed. You will get the fruits of this sin. The person whom you envy and who you are continuously tying to defeat, when you will fight him that moment the wheel of your chariot will be swallowed by the earth”
